What is powerful about therapy?

My screens are abounding with fabulous offerings which will help me feel well. Coaching, healing therapies, sound baths, retreats chock full of goodies. And they are goodies. I am all for these things. I did a lot of these things two decades ago and beyond. They helped me know my body more. They helped get me out of my head. Ultimately, they helped me get to a place where I could sit in a room with another person and feel quite exposed.
It is possible for me to participate in all of the above and not really speak or speak to my vulnerabilities.
A counsellor or therapist is hopefully able to support you to be more present with your pain and distress, Sounds awful and no wonder being blasted by sound or energy or cognitive direction to forge a forward path sounds attractive. Verbalising and speaking this stuff is important as that is what integrates through the whole system including the body and mind.
Many will know that they can have anxieties zipping around in their heads, often the result of feeling like they need to be independent and cope on their own. Be self sufficient, be less ‘difficult’ for their caregivers.
However, what is happening in people’s bodies in terms of a lack of support at the right time or a lack or repair where they were left behind as a child with their need and distress, stays there.
It can later manifest as illness, addiction and physical tension. The pressure builds as we feel more and more piling on in terms of responsibilities. Unless it’s been well modelled in our lives we quite likely don’t know what to do to really support ourselves or ask for support where and when we need it. We can be stuck not knowing what we or more importantly our bodies really need.
Often in the course of seeking physical survival and fitting in’ (which our ancient systems know helps our survival) our bodies are compromised and we feel unwell.
Survival modes are useful while we need them but can often become an impediment to feeling well.
May now is a time to explore your means of surviving which might be tripping you up. Investigating how your body, mind and soul are speaking with each other and trying to express their needs can be very liberating and feeling more whole in being in our world.
